Around the country and as of Jan. 1, 2023, in at least 4 Vermont School Districts, Parents and Community have been invited to 4 public input meetings as to what should be a new goals for graduation. Sounds like something civic minded parents should participate in. There is a gotcha to it.
1) In the first session community members come and see clips on growing digitized work environments and ask what about _____ and they are told come back next time we'll get to that.
2) In the second session - some parents comeback and the audience includes many educators. Using well rehearsed Delphi Techniques, the public is asked to choose from prepared goals and objectives the ones they feel are vital. The list has many less grounded suggestions many aligned with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) goals and some that are more spelled out. Of course the prescripted items with more details and rounded out objectives rise to the top in each of the table groups. What is missing are Constitutional foundations which are silently being replaced by Global Citizenship goals. Also missing were health and fitness goals.
3) In the third session - Initially they intended to invite the students, especially the vocal woke students, to give their opinions where parents are reminded we must listen to what the children have to say even if it's too radical for the parents. In other settings, it has been observed that If there's a clash, parents can be hushed into silence for denying student opinions to be heard. In Essex they arranged for student affinity groups to give input and brought that to the parents and staff members to prioritize the top 7 of the 9 the student groups selected. This process neglected to include conservative community groups in the mix.
4) The fourth session is usually a zoom meeting, a remote session, a celebration of our great combined efforts.

Do you notice redundancy?
How many are watered down short goals? How many choices are really here? What about anything on personal health and fitness? Why should Global Citizenship be here and not what has made our nation stand out - our Constitutional Rights? This clip tells a parent's perspective of what the Battelle experience is about. In time these topics will all have active links and further information. If they are white click on it. Come back soon.
