Reigning Hope
In June 2019, Gov. Phil Scott appointed Xusana Davis as Racial Equity Director of Vermont.
This link is to a video of the hearing they held in April with the House Educational Committee in April of 2021.
This was largely an appeal for funds - to include additional students and Abenaki representation in the group - and to obtain expert counsel - both a consultant and a meeting in San Fransisco with black history experts.
There was an exchange between the House Education Committee Chair, Kathryn Webb with Rep Peter Conlon – I'm boiling it down - The Task Force is saying, we know what the problem is, and we know where we want to be but we need the expertise to translate this into standards that are appropriate for the State Board of Education - How to finish up? Mark Hage, of the Task Force – Yes, this hits the nail on the head. There will be a need for extensive support and consultation when they begin to do this work in their communities with parents and students. We need to have resources available to local bodies who will do the hard work. Our job will be to give them the resources…

Whereas, systemic racism is a principal social determinant of individual and public health, impacting economic, employment, education, housing, justice, and health opportunities and outcomes, all of which further adversely impact the health of People of Color, and
Whereas, the COVID-19 pandemic is now exacerbating these inequities, and Black and Latino people in the United States have been nearly three times as likely to die, and
