3. Events on the horizon
1.  Vote “No” on Prop 3 “Right to Collective Bargaining” Amendment, by Renee McGuinessProp 3 goes beyond protecting workers’ rights to collectively bargain (form or join unions).
Here are three key points you should know before casting your vote on Prop 3 on the 2026 general election ballot:
1.) Employees don’t need Prop 3 to have the right to form or join a union. The right to collectively bargain is already protected under the First Amendment’s "right to assembly” clause.
2.) Prop 3 empowers unions, not employees. Prop 3 would prevent Vermont from ever giving workers the freedom to choose whether or not to join or financially support a union without risking their job.
3.) Prop 3 will exacerbate Vermont’s affordability issues. Prop 3 would reduce the Vermont Legislature's ability to enact reforms affecting collective bargaining over compensation and benefits for public sector employees (VT-NEA and VSEA), limiting options to address rising taxpayer obligations in the future.
For more information, visit VermontDailyChronicle.com and type “Prop 3” into the search bar.

Keelan: 25 years after the phone call from the Twin Towers, a widow is coping
By Don Keelan, Aug. 24, 2026, VtDailyChronicle
For Mary Fitzgerand, her husband John, and their four children, the morning of September 11th started like most late-summer mornings. John had to be at work a bit early–he left home and arrived at the World Trade Center’s South Tower’s 95th floor well before 8 AM.

Mary was attending to her morning chores when a phone call came from a friend informing her that a plane had crashed into the WTC’S North Tower. Immediately, Mary turned on the TV; the news images were pure chaos and incomprehensible. Clarification was soon to come. Within minutes, Mary received a call from John, who described what he was witnessing from his office window. The North Tower was engulfed in smoke and flames. Then John looked west and told Mary another plane was heading directly at his tower, just below the 95th floor.

The words that John spoke to Mary, at that very moment, are exceptionally emotional and will not be shared by this writer. On the morning of Sept. 11th, John was a senior executive at a financial firm. He and his co-executive were responsible for ensuring that, during an emergency, all employees moved to a safe location. According to Mary, it is impossible to assess what he did. On Sept. 11th, the firm had approximately 500 employees at the WTC, and 350 made it to safety.
Mary was never officially informed that her husband was killed. Weeks later, the government provided her with some of John’s identifiable remains.

1. GRASSROOTS VT - Let Us Remember, Reflect, and Reignite Concerns for America

Do you recall the shock that we all held realizing America was under attack? Thankfully not many have the deep wounds Mary Fitzgerald's family had. There were delayed trains, and stalled trafick, and many were spared the face of tragedy. Will we continue to unite our hearts, hold dear our Constitutional rights, and seek God's blessing for America?

Making time to remember 9/11 is a patriotic act. All Vermonters can find appreciation for our beautiful state, the bounty of the creator, and the values that have knit us together in community. STAND UP, Remember, Reflect, and Reignite appreciation for what we've had, and remember what together makes us strong, and find the reasons and support to say together - let's not let this happen again.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum has been pulling the stories, the memories, and the reflections together each year. This year the 25th Annual 9/11 Memorial will have a new video released on 9/11/26 to any who request it.  Sign up so it will come to you, and encourage others of your community to do the same. Click here

At Norwich University their 9/11 Memorial plans include having 3K flags spread about their campus for people to walk amidst and remember, reflect, and recommit to values that have held us together. At 10 pm they will have a whisper taps tribute. Though centrally located to the state, Norwich is not next door to most Vermont communities. You may like to consider arranging a similar 25th Anniversary 9/11 tribute. Create a 9/11 flag array, or designate a community flagpole or cemetery where people can gather to reflect at will or designate a time for a tribute.

Are there VFW and American Legion Members in your vicinity that might like to stir a gathering in your community? Other community leaders from scouts, churches, political groups, and selectboard and town hall may want to play roles, too.  This 9/11 Memorial site may have suggestions for you.

Sept. 17-23, celebrate our 239th Constitution Week.  Play your favorite musicians - Dolly Parton, Chet Greenwood, US Naval Band and others - while you give your family, your classmates, your community members a refresher on the privileged freedoms the US Constitution and Bill of Rights have provided WE the PEOPLE.  Are these really rights you want to see removed should the Communist agenda roll through Vermont?   It will take prayer and unity to protect our freedoms.

Click here to read a bit while listening to favorite patriotic musicians.  Make this a routine throughout Constitution Week - or all the way to mid November.

What is happening to us? Our families and communities are being torn apart along ideological lines. Why is this happening and what can we do to heal the divide?
