CLIMATE CHANGE
18 Points from 2023 Conference on Climate Change
Climate Catastrophe!
I have been privileged to attend the 15th Annual Conference on Climate Change in
Orlando, Florida February 23 to 25. For 2 days we absorbed continuous presentations
from 7:30 AM to 8 PM. A partial list of speakers is given below. You can watch many of the presentations online at www.Heartland.org.
To summarize key presentations of the conference here is a list of 18 major claims:
1. The goal of “Net Zero” is inhumane, unachievable, and unscientific. Efforts to
reach it are incredibly destructive and a radical departure from the norms of pro-human western civilization. The central goal we should be pursuing is human flourishing. Human flourishing tracks with increased CO2.
2. It is absurd to think that CO2 as a trace component of the atmosphere could
control temperature. At present the CO2 component of the atmosphere is less than
400 parts per million (PPM). This means 0.04% compared to oxygen (200,000 PPM,
20%) and nitrogen (780,000 PPM, 78%).
3. The earth would greatly benefit from doubling the current 400 PPM. Total
atmospheric CO2 has been as much as 6,000 PPM (0.6%) in the past. All plants need
and thrive on CO2. If CO2 falls to 180 PPM life on earth will become extremely difficult.
4. The average global temperature in 8 years since 2015 has not changed even
though human activity has contributed around 500 billion tons of atmospheric
CO2. There is no evidence that temperatures rise in response CO2 increase.
5. Increases in global temperatures result more from solar cycles and El Nino
occurrences which in turn are linked to Pacific rim volcanic activity. El Nino was
last seen in 2015. Solar cycles are an even greater influence on global temperature.
6. Even if “Net Zero” were possible the impact on total CO2 would be small! The
total human contribution of atmospheric CO2 is 50 billion tons per year. This is a small fraction of the naturally emitted CO2 mainly from oceans- more than 730 billion tons.
7. The attempt to replace petroleum fuels with wind and solar empowers
inhumane Chinese operations. The Chinese government uses extremely cruel
exploitation of child/slave labor in places like Africa and Afghanistan. Example: most
raw cobalt is dug by hand in the Republic of Congo for processing in China.
8. Western, comparatively free countries risk catastrophic economic damage
through “green” policies (or should we say “greed” policies). Meanwhile other
countries are increasing coal and petroleum energy usage. They understandably
consider curtailment of their plans to be the latest form of western imperialism. India
and China alone are planning to add more than 1,000 large scale coal-fired plants in the next few years. Their activities will easily erase any reductions in CO2 made by western countries.
9. Severe weather events highlighted by climate alarmists are not increasing in
number and intensity. Such weather events have always been part of history.
10. Official computer modeled temperature predictions have routinely
exaggerated global temperatures by as much as 100%.
11. Scientific studies that do not support climate alarmism are routinely censored
and marginalized. These include even the detailed studies of the IPCC and National
Climate Assessment which are inaccurately described by bureaucrats in the report
introductions and summaries.
12. Benefits of modest warming and increasing carbon dioxide are routinely
either eliminated or minimized in governmental reports.
13. The Administrative Procedures Act which governs EPA regulations needs to
be updated to require open and even-handed court handling of scientific
challenges to questionable rules.
14. Eliminating petroleum processing would cause unimaginable human suffering
because more than 6,000 common and vital manufactured products are derived
from petroleum fuel production by-products.
15. Implementing Net Zero policies and actions would mean the elimination of
petroleum fuel-derived nitrogen fertilizers and pesticides that will result in about
half the world’s population not having enough food to eat. Millions would die of
starvation.
16. “Net Zero” efforts create nightmares for wildlife. Eagles and whales are among
the most dramatic victims. The replacement of hardwood forests with faster growing
pine woods has displaced millions of animals.
17. Financially and practically harmful “Net Zero” priorities are being imposed on
investment and other corporate entities. These priorities will result in widespread
failure and harm. The goal of Net Zero by 2050 will fail completely but the effort to
achieve it could bring human catastrophe. The pursuit of wind and solar power has led to economic devastation in several countries like Sri Lanka and Spain already and this is set to be duplicated widely. Food supply, transportation means, housing availability and more will be ravaged if the alarmist agenda is allowed to proceed.
18. The mistaken concepts of global climate alarmism are being used to destroy
personal freedom and move society closer to totalitarian rule- the norm for
human history that the founders of America warned us against.
Most of the presentations were made by PhD holders including:
From the USA- Peter Hartley, William Happer, Richard Lindzen, H. Sterling Burnett,
Judith Curry, E. Calvin Beisner, Kevin D. Dayaratna, Howard Hayden, David Legates,
Mario Lewis, Thomas Sheahan, Willie Soon, Ronald Stein, and Benjamin Zycher.
And international PhD holders including:
Christopher Essex (CN), Patrick Moore (CN), Ian Plimmer (UK), Ross McKitrick (CN)
These contributors were joined by many other experts in government, law, energy,
climate science, economics, public policy and other relevant fields.
I have documented support for all of the above 18 assertions and welcome any
questions or needs for clarification or corroboration. The reader should feel welcome to use and share this information.
Submitted by Dr. Robert Burton after researching materials from Ed Wheeler
